NEVER ALONE | SHORT STORY

 

 

When you don’t have what you want, create it for yourself.

“Don’t worry! I’ll never be alone.”

“But I’m the last person you’ll see today, and you’re going to go home and be alone again.  Alone to that empty box, the same thing you’ve been doing for years.  What kind of lie is that?”

“I’m not lying!  I always have people around me. See?”

I look at her like she’s crazy.  There’s nothing to see, save the stupid smile on her face.  

But then, she reaches up ever so gently and wraps her fingers into the air beside her.  And my eyes tremble.  I see it.  I see her tug her hand closer to herself, holding the fabric of an invisible scarf, worn by an imaginary man that now started to lean in towards her from her gesture.  Her other arm wraps warmly around the shoulders of a woman that she hugs closer, a woman that I can’t see with my eyes.  But I know she loves those people so strongly that I can feel their essence as they are presented to me.  As they stare at me, more people materialize around her.  All of them look at her with the kind of love that humans can only dream of finding in their limited lifetimes.

And so I realized you weren’t lying.

They were with you the whole time, weren’t they?  Wholeness from thin air.  The invisible that you willed into presence.  Happiness created from nothing.  

I thought you had no one, but I was so wrong.  You smile at me in knowing.

I’ll likely post more of my short stories on the blog too, like this one.  I feel a lot of artists and writers feel this way about their characters.  This story captures the force with which we bring the imagined into reality.  Yet in a way, it isn’t forced at all, at least for me.  It comes as easily and gently as breathing.

Perhaps some of my readers can relate.
